A Common Data Environment (CDE) is a central repository where facility information is managed.

It enables storing Project Information Models (PIMs), along with the Project Information Requirements (PIR) to be worked on, exported to, and checked for conformance (Quality Control), to result into Asset Information Models (AIMs) that contain verified and usable Information Models used for Operations, Renovations and Upgrades. The Lifecycle Twin CDE is not only a file-based storage, but a lifecycle storage environment where data is always linked to the baseline BIM data which can be managed, refined, exchanged, and queried. The following diagram illustrates the typical activities that use CDE across the different lifecycle phases in a building.
