A hop is a segment of the path between routers. Data passes from one network device to another.

The hop count refers to the number of devices through which data passes, starting from source (TBR) to the destination (end device).

The maximum recommended number of hops in a Thread system is 4 so that the maximum recommended number of TMEs between a TBR and an end device is 3.

The Thread system still operates if the maximum number of 4 hops is exceeded but system stability noticeably deteriorates beyond 4 hops.
