An obstacle is a physical object that hinders the passage of the Thread radio signal.

Place Thread devices in a clear line of sight between devices as much as possible.

Typical obstacles:

  • Fire safety zones, walls, and doors
  • Concrete structures (e.g. elevators, staircases)
  • Kitchens and bathrooms
  • Standing water
  • People

The following chapters go into greater detail on the obstacles and how they impact signal strength. They also give suggestions on how to mitigate the impact.

For additional information on the damping effect refer to the Wireless basic training. See 'Related documentation'.
