The below table provides the detail about which changes in a Physical or Virtual machine can cause impact on license.

Physical Machine

When any product runs on a physical machine, the following situations can have impact on license:

Case

Description

Result

Can be repaired

Unique Machine numbers (UMN1 and UMN2) change

Licensing checks for: - UMN1: the manufacturer physical hard disk serial number and the disk model - UMN2: MAC address of the Network Interface Card. It is only suitable for a physical device, therefore non-hot-swappable (e.g. USB, PC-BUS) and not a driver abstraction (e.g. "RAS Async Adapter").

If UMN1 and UMN2 change together license become restricted.

NOTE: If only one of the UMN changes the license, remain valid.

Yes

PC hardware change\upgrade

The following hardware elements (HID=host identifier) are verified:

-Boot disk serial number

- MAC address of the Ethernet adapter

- CPU identifier

- BIOS identifier

- RAM size - Hostname

- IP address

If more than 50% of the listed devices changes all at once a binding break occurs, causing license to become restricted.

Yes

The machine image is copied to another machine.

The Unique Machine Identifier (UMI) is no longer valid.

The license becomes restricted.

No

Operating System upgrade

The O.S. upgrade can alter the order in which hardware devices are discovered.

The license may become restricted.

Yes

Virtual Machine

When any product runs on a virtual machine, the following situations can have impact on the license:

Case

Description

Result

Can be repaired

VM Clone

The virtual machine is cloned and it is started in the same Host or in a different Host.

The license becomes restricted.

No

VM Copied

The virtual machine is copied from a different Host or within the same Host.

The license becomes restricted.

No

VM revert to snapshot

The virtual machine is restored to a snapshot (image) previously saved.

The license becomes restricted.

No

VM restore from backup

The VM is restored from a backed up image.

The license becomes restricted

No

MAC addresses of VM change

The MAC address of the VM is changed via the virtual machine manager (VVM). If there is more than one MAC address, all addresses need to be changed.

The license becomes restricted. NOTE: If more than one MAC address is present and only one MAC is changed the license remain valid.

No

Live Migration/vMotion

The Live Migration function allows the transfer of virtual machines between different physical nodes within the cluster without any service interruption.

The license is maintained.

Not required

Note: For those cases where the license repair is possible, the restricted licenses can be repaired through the LMU tool or the LMU.
