License Management System (LMS)

The LMS term used in this document does not describe a solution but is a generic term used for whatever is needed to create, management, delivery, store data’s… licenses for our system. The major tasks of a License Management System are license generation, license management, and license reporting and product definition. In particular this covers the following areas: Generate License Files. Summarize multiple license files to one license file. Generate license pools for 3rd party supplier (e.g. VAP, Offline Case...). Distribution/transfer of license files per e.g. e-mail or download. Display the status of a license (ordered, generated, transferred, …). Web-Interface for generation and download a licenses. Overview of all products, versions, and options; History of all license generations. Customer reports. Handling of license updates; Import from ERP systems (e.g. SAP). User administration (access rights, …). The license generator is usually located at a central place (e.g. Siemens HQ). In addition it is thinkable that any “license generator satellites” are located on local engineering notebooks. This will support the offline case, but requires a time wise synchronization to the central license generator.
